'Origin and Cosmos' by Mathew Tooher

I am a keen amateur landscape and astronomy photographer.

Has lockdown changed you? How? Why?

While lockdown has limited my ability to go out and take photographs it has allowed me more time to develop my photo editing skills.

What made you smile or brought you joy in lockdown? Can you explain it?

Art, Photography and being creative bring me joy and make me smile.

Have you changed since lockdown? Tell me why.

I don't feel that lockdown has changed me significantly.

What is the story behind your hand art?

I feel that this image signifies the creation of everything and everyone and our connection to the cosmos. This connection to the cosmos has been eroded through modern life and the effects of light pollution. Our lost connection to the cosmos can be restored with the knowledge that every atom in our bodies, every person we've ever known, every animal, vegetable and mineral has been created inside a star. We are all made from star stuff, created millions of years ago from the Supernovas of dying stars. Far into the future we will again become stars, as the dust and hot gases of the cosmos coalesce and give birth to new stars and galaxies; they in turn will eventually die out and explode, and so the cycle continues...

Is there anything else you would like to share?

The background stars are from a photograph of the night sky that I took in the dark skies of the Brecon Beacons. The hands are from Michelangelos' 'The Creation of Adam' from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Italy. The images have been combined in photo editing software with various filters and adjustments added to increase contrast, colour and clarity.
